Food And Supplies Needed for the Linux Anniversary Picnic and Barbecue (Picn*x)

  • Note:* This page is regarding the picnic events in general, and are not related to a specific year's event. Keep that in mind!

Food crew

  • Setup - buy the food in the morning
  • find overnight storage ( refridgerate to allow frozen items to thaw ) as needed for non-perishable food purchases the night before
  • Coordinate who is buying what ... and what time it all arrives at the picnic
  • Operations - get food as needed at around 12:00 - 1:00am for items in short supply
  • Cleanup - disperse leftovers equally

Quantities and mixture of food

  • mike and allen has a spreadsheet of items bought in previous picnics

Food Provided by Sponsors

Actual Food Consumption ( Budget ) for 2005 Picnic

Cooking Utensils

  • super long spatchula
  • super long thongs
  • steel wool to clean the grills
  • can openers

Budgeting for food

  • meats ( hamburger, hotdogs )
  • specialty grill ( shrimp, steak, .. )
  • hamburger buns, hotdog buns
  • potato salad, etc
  • chili ( with and without meat )
  • drinks ( water, soda, juice is way more expensive )
  • condiments ( pickles, mayonaise, mustard, relish, ketchup )
  • vegetables ( lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese, american cheese )
  • untensils ( plastic fork, plastic knife, plastic spoons )
  • large serving plates and serving spoons
  • paper goods ( paper plates, paper towels, napkins, aluminum foil, saran wrap )
  • trash bags, recycle boxes into temporaty trash cans

Plan the food buying based on rthe RSVP * 10% - 20% more

  • if using slashdot, you can expect 33% no shows
  • the "number of no shows" will typically cancel the "just show up" without rsvp

Grill

  • clean the grills with steel wool and wipe down with wet paper towels
  • self starting charcoal
  • charcoal lighter fluid might leave "a taste" behind on grilled items
  • long utensils for flipping burgers
  • non-stick spray for veggie grill

Food Storage

  • refridgerator would be ideal ( like picnic-10 )
  • 48quart ice chests ( lots of um, more is better ) with signs of whats inside
  • store food in shades ( never leave food in direct sunlight )
  • large 50gal ( wide-n-shallow ) plastic containers for cold drinks
  • large containers for hotdog and hamburger buns ( prevents squishing it )
  • aluminum foil, aluminum pans for storage, cooking and left-overs

Too much food or too little food

  • make a food run during the peek to get needed supplies
  • too much food will be either wasted or "recycled"

Options for Left Over Foods:

  • donate unopned canned items to food banks ( 2nd harvest )
  • note that food banks does NOT accept used or opened items
  • note that food banks does NOT accept perishables ( fruits, vegetables, bread, condiments(mayo, mustard, ketchup, salt, pepper, etc )
  • recycle plastic bottles, soda cans

Sharing Leftovers

  • dibss... left over portions should be equally circulated to each that wants some instead of the entire case of drinks to one person ( say 6-pack maximum )
  • it's obviously harder to divide a gallon of mustard/ketchup, so some items will probably not be "sharable"
