Subject: reminder: Linux Picnic today
Good morning! This is being sent to guests who confirmed their RSVPs.
It looks like we'll have a nice day for the Linux Picnic today. Temperatures
will be around 68 in the afternoon. Low clouds ("the marine layer") will
hang around as usual during the morning for setup and should break giving us
blue skies by lunchtime and through the afternoon.
Guests should plan to attend between 11AM and 4PM. To help with setup you
may arrive as early as 8:30AM. To help with cleanup, stay as late as 5PM.
Even if you can only help a little, it's still appreciated!
The Sunnyvale Baylands Park is in Sunnyvale (about 5 miles north of
San Jose) just north of Hwy 237 at Lawrence/Caribbean. The park charges
$6 per vehicle for entry. (That's up from $5 which they charged until 2009.
This change was just pointed out to us.) Save your receipt in case you need
to leave and come back in.
Turn *right* after entering and park anywhere. We have reserved the
Meadowlands picnic area, which will be the 2nd picnic area. Look for
the "Picn*x" banner! Please see the registration table upon arrival.
The Baylands Park is a beautiful place with walking and cycling trails.
Please note that the "Great Meadow" sports field is shared among all users
of the park.
Wi-Fi at the picnic is again provided by volunteers of the Silicon Valley
Wireless Users & Experimenters (SVWUX).
Some tables are reserved by Open Source groups. If you're interested in
the project or group, go ahead and ask - they may welcome you to join them
and even eat your food there with them. The point of the reserved tables
is to have places to talk about these Open Source projects.
Even if the reserved tables are busy, there are plenty of non-reserved tables
open to any registered guests.
We're obligated to let you know the park rules:
* Nothing can be attached to or leaned on trees.
* The park is a wildlife refuge. Do not bring pets. If you see any
animals, leave them alone - don't even feed them.
* The park only allows beer or wine to be consumed as part of a meal.
All other alcohol is forbidden.
* No soliciting is allowed in the park.
While there are some things which groups may be giving away, please be sure
to ask before taking anything. For example, some volunteers brought some
beer for themselves a number of years ago and it disappeared shortly after
they arrived to work on the picnic. If you have a private cooler, we can
help put a piece of masking tape with "private" on it to avoid confusion.
All the picnic-provided food and drinks will be in the front of sections 2-4
of the 5 "wedge" sections that make up the picnic area.
If you want to help, we'll be happy to accept help with setup, registration
table, cooking, and then cleanup at the end. Much appreciated!
If you have an Amateur Radio license, Hams will be on 446.5 simplex within
the park.
We have 5 groups who requested shuttle pickup. We'll send them a cell
number to call for pickup in a separate message. But if anyone else needs
to be added, send an e-mail to
picnx19-shuttle@linuxpicnic.org
with your name, the pickup location (VTA Crossman or Old Ironsides, Sunnyvale
Caltrain or Amtrak Great America) and and the scheduled arrival of your train
or bus.
Thanks to the Open Source organizations which have promoted Picn*x 19 on
their web sites, mail lists or social networks, and/or have a table at the
picnic: (did we miss anyone?)

We'd like to thank Google for sponsoring the park reservation. Food is
being covered by optional donations. We could still use more to make sure
all the volunteer out-of-pocket expenses for food are reimbursed. If we
have extra, it will be allocated to next year's picnic.

After the picnic is done, please let us know how it can be improved next year.
We'll collect these comments and have a post-picnic debrief meeting on
Thursday, August 26 at 6PM at Baylands Park in the Meadowlands picnic area,
the same location as the picnic. You're welcome to attend. We'll also be
taking volunteers for any roles in Picn*x 20 starting immediately. Let us
know how you'd like to help.
2011 will mark the 20th anniversary of Linux! So we expect and should plan
on a big picnic next year. The economy should be better then too. And even
for users of other Open Source OS's, the Linux 20th anniversary will be a
major Open Source community historical landmark too - so join in!
