Overview of the Linux Picnic Charter
This is a summary of the contents of the Linux Picnic Charter.
The charter was approved by a vote of the Linux Picnic participants on January 1-3, 2008. The charter text is at

This page is only intended as a summary and overview of the charter. In case of a conflict or ambiguity between this summary and the charter text, the charter is the final word. Please bring any such cases to the attention of the Linux Picnic crew.
- establishes a Linux Picnic Steering Committee (LPSC) consisting of
- up to 6 people elected by the Linux Picnic membership
- up to 6 people as representatives of Open Source Partner Organizations
- up to 3 people selected by the South Bay Community Network's Board of Directors (maintains legal link to the 501(c)3 non-profit umbrella)
- terms on the steering committee are for the calendar year
- establishes LPSC members as the officers of the Linux Picnic
- authorizes LPSC to select the Linux Picnic Coordinator
- establishes the Linux Picnic Coordinator as the leader of the Linux Picnic
- establishes criteria for qualifications of Open Source Partner Organizations
- must be a non-profit Open Source software organization
- must encourage its members to participate in the Linux Picnic
- must encourage users of mail lists, web sites, etc to attend the picnic
- policies may set other criteria
- establishes e-mail decision-making procedures, borrowed from Apache/BSD style
- allows Linux Picnic policies to be set by any of the following, in order from highest to lowest precedence
- vote of the Linux Picnic membership
- vote of the LPSC
- vote of the Open Source Partner Organizations
- allows policies to set rules for e-mail lists and netiquette
- establishes qualifications for membership in the Linux Picnic
- must have participated in a Linux Picnic
- there are no dues for membership!!!!
- claiming a voting membership is good for one year, renewable any time
- allows the LPSC to remove members/participants for misconduct
- for conflict resolution, LPSC acts as arbiter or appoints an arbiter
- establishes procedures to amend the charter by any of the following methods
- 2/3 approval by the Linux Picnic membership plus simple majority approval by the South Bay Community Network's Board of Directors
- 3/4 approval by the Open Source Partner Organizations plus simple majority approval by the South Bay Community Network's Board of Directors
- 2/3 approval by the South Bay Community Network's Board of Directors
